An eye injury to Super Middleweight Champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KOs)
has forced him to withdraw from the Super Six Tournament on Wednesday, putting
his career in the air as well as dealing a serious blow to the tournament as it
is nearing its end. Oh yeah that unfortunately means the September 25th
title defense against Allan Green is canned as well.....
I like Allan Green. I became intrigued in Allan’s game when he flat out ruined Jaidon Codrington’s career by delivering one of the most brutal knockouts I have ever seen. Green talks a ton of smack too and during the build up to this fight he let the media know how disrespected he felt by being left out of the Super Six to begin with and vowed to make a statement to the boxing world by taking it out on reigning WBA champ Andre Ward. Let’s just say he didn’t. Either Andre Ward is that good or Green wasn’t ready. Maybe it was both because Ward simply manhandled Green. This fight wasn’t close from the opening bell. I hate to say this but I honestly thought Jermain Taylor would have put up a better fight….seriously. Ward played the role of bully in the ring as he roughed up Green against the ropes all night long..............
Andre Ward defended his WBA super middleweight championship while
winning his Group Stage 2 match of the Super Six World Boxing Classic
tournament with a shutout performance over a very subdued, Allan Green.
All three judges had identical scores of 120-108 for the champ, fighting
before his hometown crowd, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland California,
telecast by Showtime. The fight was fought in an eighteen foot ring that
was thought to favor the challenger because it would limit the movement
of his opponent. Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) felt that he had been dissed by
not being included in the tournament from its inception and was on a
mission to make a spectacular statement in the ring, that would show the
world, he belonged there. The first round started with both fighters
being cautious as they threw jabs and ended up in clenches. Referee Raul
Caiz Sr. had his hands full separating the fighters throughout the
night. Allan was quite effective at cutting off the ring, but before he
could set up, Ward (21-0, 13 KO’s) would move in, smothering him. The
champ landed more punches, winning the round. As the fight progressed
the fighters began to move in different directions, as far as their
goals were concerned.........
Let me start out by saying this: Andre Ward is a beast. Plain and simple. For those of us who questioned Ward’s toughness before tonight need only reference to dismantling of Allan Green.
Allan Green, the loquacious fighter from Tulsa, Oklahoma, came into the fight with a lofty record (29-2, 20KO) and even loftier ambitions. “ I should have been in this tournament from the start. No disrespect to Jermaine (Taylor)…. If he (Ward) opens himself up for a knockout, I’m going to take it”, stated Green sometime during media gatherings preceding the bout. Green boasted a slight height advantage, a 4 inch reach advantage, and the reputation of being the more powerful puncher over the accomplished Ward (22-0, 13KO).
That is where the advantages ended for Green.
Andre Ward showed flashes of future brilliance in his 12 round dismantling of Green. For much of the fight Ward stayed closely attached to chest of Green while simultaneously landing combinations of body shots, uppercuts, and right hooks to the head.

This coming Saturday, June 19th, will mark the return of the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament that has been a real barnburner since its inception, last fall. Six of the top fighters are vying for supremacy in the super middleweight division. Group Stage 2 of the tournament will begin for WBA Super Middleweight champ Andre Ward, who will be throwing down before his hometown crowd at the Oracle Arena in Oakland California, taking on Allan Green, who entered the mix after Jermaine Taylor decided that his second KO in as many fights was something he needed to meditate on, and KO’d himself from the tourney. Ward (20-0, 13 KO’s) is coming off of a.........
